Among the leaders of childhood cancer treatment, St. Jude was designated by VHL Alliance as the first and only VHL (Von Hippel-Lindau) Clinical Care Center that specifically addresses the needs of children. Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome is a hereditary rare genetic condition characterized by tumors which form in body areas that have blood vessels such as the brain, eyes, inner ear, and spinal cord. Children that suffer from VHL syndrome are at high risk of developing numerous benign or cancerous tumors at various stages of their lives. These tumors can lead to serious complications such as hearing loss, blindness or death.

According to Regina Nuccio, a St. Jude senior genetic counselor in the Division of Cancer Predisposition, the medical facility has sufficient expert staff including genetic counselors and pediatric specialists who continuously engage in VHL tumor surveillance. Staff in the Cancer Predisposition Program collaborate closely with families to put in place early detection measures and surveillance to provide the best treatment for kids with genetic diseases including VHL. Additionally, the team works with scientists to discover medical techniques in order to help children who’re at a higher risk of getting cancer.
